Unique in the Saarland

The Gustav II North winding machine

The Gustav II Nord winding machine is a true jewel of Saarland mining history. Built in 1916 by Dingler'sche Maschinenfabrik in Zweibrücken, it worked tirelessly for almost a century - until the final closure of the Velsen mine in 2005. Today, it is the oldest surviving steam hoisting machine in Saar mining and a unique technical monument.

Double-trunk Gustavschacht II

Gustavschacht II was a double-trunk shaft, equipped with two independent winding systems. This is why the machine house also has a double construction. While the south machine was unfortunately scrapped, the north machine has been preserved in exceptionally good condition.

From steam to compressed air

The steam engine, built in 1916, was converted from drum operation to the more modern Koepe drive pulley in 1936. In its final years of operation, it no longer ran on superheated steam but on compressed air - a pragmatic step after the boiler house had to make way for the construction of the Velsen waste incineration plant.

Unique in the region

Thanks to the tireless commitment of Berg- und Hüttenleute Warndt e.V., the machine has been preserved for decades. Today, as the oldest steam hoisting machine in Saarland, it stands for the roots of our industrial culture and invites visitors on a journey through time into the history of technology.

What you can expect

"The huge steam engine is absolutely impressive. When you stand in front of it, you can feel the engineering skill of times gone by. An experience that will delight every technology fan.
